About Zoë Dean Smith

A career shaped by people, purpose and possibility

I started my working life as an architectural technician in Eswatini. Since then, I’ve been a waterskiing instructor in Mauritius, worked in human resources, led a social enterprise, supported entrepreneurs across Africa and Asia, managed major philanthropic investments and spent more than a decade developing women leaders around the world.

It may sound like an unconventional journey. To me, there has always been a thread connecting it: a fascination with people, an instinct for bringing them together and a belief in what becomes possible when people are given the space, support and opportunity to thrive.

That thread has taken me across countries, cultures and sectors and continues to shape the work I do today.

Where the journey took me

One of the most formative chapters of my career began at Gone Rural in Eswatini, where I led a social enterprise working with women artisans in rural communities. It was there that I saw firsthand how business, when rooted in purpose, could create economic opportunity and meaningful change.

That experience opened the door to work across Africa and Asia with entrepreneurs, social enterprises and international organizations. I later managed a multimillion-dollar portfolio for The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation before joining Vital Voices Global Partnership, where I spent more than a decade in senior leadership developing programs and supporting women leaders around the world.

Through it all, I learned to move comfortably between very different worlds, from rural communities to corporate boardrooms and global gatherings. And I learned that meaningful change begins with listening, relationships and bringing the right people together.

What I’ve learned along the way

I’ve learned that some of the most powerful work begins with listening, that people often have more wisdom and capacity than they realize and that bringing the right people together, creating space for honest conversation and asking good questions can unlock possibilities that no one person could have created alone.

Those lessons have shaped how I lead, facilitate and work with people today.

The Holistic Life Map™

Along the way, I also began thinking more deeply about what it means to live and lead well. In 2005, I developed the Holistic Life Map™ as a tool for myself, a way to step back from the busyness of life and look at the whole picture.

What began as a personal practice eventually became something I shared with others. Today, the Holistic Life Map has become one of the ways that I help people and teams create space for reflection, perspective and intentional choices about what comes next.

What I’m doing now

Today, through Zoë Dean Smith LLC, I bring these different strands of my experience together, working with leaders, organizations and communities through strategy, leadership development, facilitation and the Holistic Life Map.

I’m also continuing to explore what has always interested me most: how we create meaningful connection, strengthen communities and help people see new possibilities for themselves and for one another.

A little more about me

🌍 Eswatini will always be home. It shaped who I am and how I see the world.

🏋️‍♀️ I’ve been teaching group fitness since 1992. Movement has been a constant throughout almost every chapter of my life.

✈️ I’m endlessly curious about people and places. Travel, conversation and experiencing different cultures continue to be some of my greatest sources of energy and learning.

🐾 And then there’s Cooper. My three-legged rescue pup and Chief Happiness Officer, who is very good at keeping life in perspective.
